Ion Nitriding
HTG offers plasma (ion) nitriding services for ferrous alloys. This process takes place at relatively low temperatures (700F-1200F), which results in nitrogen diffusion into the base material.
The diffusion of nitrogen occurs through the "glow discharge" phenomenon. "Glow discharge" involves the ionization of process gas and its subsequent bombardment on the load (cathode), which allows atomic nitrogen formation and diffusion into the base material.
The "glow" is the characteristic purple glow covering the parts in an ion nitriding furnace. HTG's investment in ion nitriding has also benefited customers. By discussing specific applications with our engineering support team, many customers have found ion nitriding to be a preferred surface treatment for their products.
Advantages that have increased the popularity of ion nitriding include:
Improved Control of Case Thickness
Lower Processing Temperatures
Lower Distortion
No Environmental Hazards
Simple Masking Techniques
Reduced Cycle Times
Complete Control of Nitrided Layers
